Helmholtz Zentrum München is a research institution of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Free State of Bavaria. It is divided into 33 research institutes and independent research units, which are interlinked and cooperate on various topics and in various research programs. The centre has diverse technology platforms which function as central service units. The Institute of Groundwater Ecology focuses on the processes of self-cleaning and the transport of harmful substances in groundwater. The principle aim is to research the microbial processes that lead to self-cleaning of groundwater and thus contribute to preserving our most important source of drinking water.
